What is a palatal expander and how does it work?
A palatal expander, also known as a rapid palatal expander or orthodontic expander, is a custom-made appliance that gradually widens the upper jaw to create more space for permanent teeth and correct bite issues. It works by applying gentle outward pressure on the two halves of the upper jaw, which haven't yet fused together in growing children. Over a series of small daily adjustments, the appliance encourages the jaw to expand naturally, improving alignment between the upper and lower jaws.
At what age should a child get a palatal expander?
Palatal expanders are most effective for children between the ages of 7 and 10, when the upper jaw is still developing and the two halves of the palate have not yet fused. Treating at this stage allows for gentle, predictable expansion without surgery. Treatment may still be possible for older children and teens, but adults with severe expansion needs may require surgical assistance. Does wearing a palatal expander hurt?

How long does a child have to wear a palatal expander?
Most children wear a palatal expander for approximately 4 to 6 months, with the active expansion phase typically lasting 2 to 4 weeks. After the desired expansion is achieved, the appliance remains in place for several additional months to allow new bone to form and stabilize the results. What problems can a palatal expander correct?

Will my child still need braces after using a palatal expander?
In most cases, yes. A palatal expander corrects the underlying width of the upper jaw, but braces or clear aligners are typically needed afterward to align the individual teeth into their final positions. Many children begin Phase II orthodontic treatment with braces a few years after their expander is removed, once most of their permanent teeth have erupted. Phase I treatment with a palatal expander makes Phase II shorter, simpler, and more predictable.

Caring for a palatal expander requires good oral hygiene and a few simple precautions. Have your child brush around the appliance thoroughly after every meal to prevent food buildup, and use a water flosser or syringe to flush out trapped debris. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage or dislodge the expander, including ice, caramel, gum, and hard candies.
