Fortunately, a dental emergency in the field of orthodontics is quite a rare occurrence. Life with braces is normally not that hard once you’ve made the necessary minor adjustments; it is pain-free and is a sign you’re on your way to creating the smile you’ve always wanted.
Of course, accidents can still happen. There are two major ways that orthodontic emergencies may be avoided:
- Remember to ALWAYS wear a mouth guard when playing sports: wearing braces won’t prevent you from enjoying your favorite activities, but you must take this precaution in order to minimize the risk of mouth injuries.
- It is equally important to AVOID biting or chewing hard foods (such as hard candies) or ice cubes. This will keep you from damaging or breaking your appliances.
If you keep these two rules in mind, you’ll mostly be able to enjoy a safe orthodontic journey with few complications. However, there are cases when something goes wrong with your appliances or your teeth. If this occurs, don’t hesitate to contact us as soon as you can. Is It Dental Emergency?
When it comes to emergency care, know that you can handle most of the issues that may occur all by yourself. We are, however, ready to offer dental emergency care to our patients whenever needed. Here are some of the things that can go awry during your orthodontic treatment:
Soreness or Discomfort in Your Mouth
This is not generally considered an emergency. It is perfectly normal to have a feeling of soreness or discomfort when you first start wearing the braces. This is only part of the adjustment process; there is something new in your mouth that your teeth, tongue, cheeks, and lips must get accustomed to. So no worries: we promise this is temporary.
Food Caught Between Teeth
This isn’t considered an emergency, either, but it can be quite disconcerting. You can manage this issue from the comfort of your home using dental floss. It’s mandatory that you get rid of the food debris, as any long-term accumulation will lead to cavities and gum disease. So, floss, floss, floss.
Irritation of Cheeks and Lips
Again, this may happen in the first stage of the treatment when your mouth is still trying to adjust to the appliances. In case of irritation, we recommend using orthodontic wax. It will soothe the specific area and will help you eat and talk better. If this doesn’t help, then it would be best to contact us.
Loose Appliance, Bracket, or Wire
If your braces or appliance(s) happen to loosen over time, it is recommended that you consult with us about this issue. We will fix it. However, if for some reason you can’t get to our office right away, you can use wax to manage any of these problems.
Poking Wires
In case you find a wire irritating, you can try to use a cotton swab to push it away from the wounded area or cover it with wax. If the wire still bothers you, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

What qualifies as an orthodontic emergency?
An orthodontic emergency involves severe pain, trauma to the face or mouth, or significant damage to your braces or appliances that cannot wait for a regular appointment. Examples include a broken bracket causing injury, a wire poking deep into the cheek, a knocked-out tooth, or a serious sports-related mouth injury. Minor issues such as soreness, food caught between teeth, or mild irritation are not considered emergencies and can usually be managed at home.
What should I do if a wire is poking my cheek or gums?
If a wire is poking the inside of your mouth, try gently pushing it back into a more comfortable position using a clean cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. If the wire won't budge, cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax to protect the soft tissue. What should I do if a bracket comes loose or falls off?
If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. If the bracket comes off completely, save it and bring it to your next appointment. Call F&S Orthodontics and Periodontics as soon as possible so we can determine whether you need to come in right away or wait until your next scheduled visit. Avoid eating hard or sticky foods until the bracket has been repaired.
Is it normal to feel pain or soreness after getting braces?
Yes. Mild soreness and tenderness are completely normal during the first few days after braces are placed and after each adjustment appointment. This discomfort is a sign that your teeth are beginning to move into their proper positions. Over-the-counter pain relievers, rinsing with warm salt water, and eating soft foods can help ease the soreness. The discomfort typically subsides within 3 to 5 days as your mouth adjusts.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth or suffer a sports injury while wearing braces?
A knocked-out tooth or facial trauma is a serious dental emergency that requires immediate attention. Contact F&S Orthodontics and Periodontics right away, and if a tooth has been completely knocked out, see an emergency dentist or visit the nearest emergency room within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard during sports is the best way to prevent these injuries while in orthodontic treatment.
How can I prevent orthodontic emergencies during treatment?
Most orthodontic emergencies can be prevented by following two simple rules: always wear a mouthguard during sports or physical activities, and avoid biting hard or sticky foods such as ice, hard candy, popcorn kernels, nuts, caramel, and chewing gum.
